Observers within the outsourcing industry of the Philippines expressed their worries on the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), fearing that it will chip away at the $23 billion sector.

The country’s BPO industry has overtaken India in the past few years, and is a major economic driver which has generated 1.15 million jobs. However, Sutherland Global Services CDO Rajneesh Tiwary said that Filipino’s excellent command of spoken English may cease to be an advantage a few years from now.

IT & Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) president Ray Untal also expects AI to replace around 50,000 process-driven BPO jobs in the next five years.
