Thousands of Bitcoin Miners Left Unsecured on the Internet

A Dutch security researcher has recently discovered around 2,893 Bitcoin miners left completely open, without passwords on their Telnet ports. Victor Gevers, who also chairs the GDI Foundation, suspect that the devices, based on their IPs, may be part of a state-sponsored effort of the Chinese government. Gevers added that was able to gather proof that other visitors tried to install malware and backdoors on these devices. South Korea’s Cyber Warfare Research Center is pointing at North Korean hackers as prime suspects for the attack on at least one of their Bitcoin exchanges. Cybersecurity firm Cybereason says that the hacking might have been done in retaliation to the tightening of economic sanctions brought by North Korea’s missile tests. Detroit, Michigan – Last Wednesday, accounting firm EY announced the it will be launching a blockchain based system named Tesseract which should help revolutionize record keeping in the vehicle sharing industry. CoinMiner Malware Uses EternalBlue to Force Infected PCs to Mine Cryptocurrency

Trend Micro researchers have reported that cyber criminals are now hijacking Windows PCs with a fileless malware that forces the computer to mine cryptocurrency. The ‘CoinMiner’ malware exploits the EternalBlue flaw used by WannaCry and NotPetya. Microsoft has already released a patch for the vulnerability last March, but for computers that haven’t been updated, the malware will trigger a WMI script to download malware or mining software every three hours. Trend Micro recommends that admins SMBv1 file-sharing protocol, and use the Microsoft tool that can trace WMI activity.      Source: ZDNet

It was reported last Tuesday that ten major companies will be joining IBM in exploring the potential of blockchain technology for improving safety and tracking food supply chains. The companies that will be participating are Nestle, Unilever, Dole, McCormick, Walmart, Tyson Foods, Kroger Co., Golden State Foods, Driscoll’s Inc. and Berkshire Hathaway’s McLane Co. VP of IBM blockchain business development Brigid McDermott said that aside from building the technology, the project also seeks to build the ecosystem. Bitcoin Cash Recovery Tool Launched by BTC.com

Earlier this August, a cryptocurrency wallet BTC.com has released a tool that can recover Bitcoin cash that was “trapped” by the hard fork that happened last August 1. Some Bitcoin Cash owners were left without access to their tokens when a few exchanges decided not to support SegWit. BTC.com online marketing manager Nikol Daru says in a blog post that the tool should make the process of recovering Bitcoin Cash from a Bitcoin wallet easier for non-technically inclined clients. Another Bitcoin Split to Happen in 3 Months

Right after a split that took place at the start of the month, another Bitcoin hard fork is scheduled to happen three months from now. Jean-Pierre Rupp, Bitcoinj developer, filed an announcement earlier this week which mentioned the upgrade to 2MB blocks that will continue to work on SegWit2x. While SegWit2x members gave the proposal their general approval, Bitcoin core developers opposing SegWit2x said that the Bitcoin Core client 0.15.0 will automatically be disconnecting nodes supporting the fork. Seattle, USA – US sports betting platform Unikrn will be holding an initial coin offering next month amounting to $100 million in cryptocurrency. The company’s new coin called UnikoinGold, will be available for pre-selling within the next few weeks, while the crowdsale will be in September. UnikoinGold will be replacing the Unikrn’s current coin, Unikoin. Co-founder and CEO Rahul Sood, who previously ran Microsoft’s startup venture fund, revealed that his company embraced cryptocurrency to bypass the banks, who were difficult to work with.
