In an open letter published last Tuesday, more than 100 child health experts called on Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to discontinue the company’s Messenger Kids app, which according to them, is an “irresponsible” attempt to entice younger children into using the popular social media platform.

The letter, signed by child welfare groups including the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and Parents Across America, said that a growing body of research has already established that excessive use of social media and digital devices pose developmental risks to children’s development since they are not yet mature enough to comprehend the complexities of online relationships.

However, Facebook countered and said that it was a tool for kids to stay in touch with family members and even said that it is sometimes used by parents to read bedtime stories to their children.
