Facebook announced last Monday that it will be allowing a team of independent academic researchers access to its proprietary user data in order to assess the impact of social media in elections.

The social network will be forming an outside commission of academic scholars that will study anonymized, privacy-protected data for the sole purpose of understanding and improving social media’s impact on society.

Backed by a number of prominent funders, Facebook executives said that it is seeking to understand its impact on upcoming elections in countries like Brazil, India, Mexico and the US midterms to better inform its future product and policy decisions
