Researchers at Trend Micro recently revealed the existence of a malware dubbed GhostTeam, which was published back in April 2017. The malware, which targets Android users, is reportedly being spread by a total of 53 apps on Google’s Play Store.
One such app called “Download Videos from Facebook” was identified to be carrying the GhostTeam malware, which is known to steal Facebook login credentials and aggressively display popup ads. The researchers said that the malware can potentially also be used by attackers to distribute other malware, mine cryptocurrency, or even spread fake news.
Experts say that thousands of devices had already been infected in Indonesia, Brazil, Vietnam, Australia and the Philippines. They also advise users to turn of 2-factor authentication to protect their accounts.
