A few days ago, computer manufacturers have began offering systems with Intel’s ME (Management Engine) disabled. The CPU technology was recently revealed to have a number of security-related flaws which may allow attackers to control a target’s system.
Some of the first vendors to offer ME-blocked systems were Dell, Purism, and System76. Dell will be offering its customers the option to purchase systems without Intel’s ME, while System76 will only provide firmware that can disable ME.
Meanwhile, experts noted that Purism had already offered systems with ME disabled a month before Intel’s disclosure of the issue. Describing itself as a “freedom-respecting” manufacturer, the company decided to pursue a solution of disabling ME which had been published much earlier to give its customers greater privacy.
