A report from Israeli firm ClearSky Cybersecurity recently revealed that the Iranian hacker Behzad Mesri, who is wanted for the HBO hacking incident, is part of an elite cyber espionage group called “Charming Kitten”.
The group, classified as an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT), has been active since 2013 and is suspected to be backed by the local Iranian government.
However, investigators believe that Mesri may have acted alone on the HBO hack, since the hacker repeatedly contacted media organizations to get publicity for the hack to pressure HBO into paying the ransom. It was noted that this modus operandi is not characteristic of Charming Kitten ops, which are often conducted under the radar and are not financially motivated.
