The capabilities of IBM’s Project Debater was recently demonstrated when it was pitted against Israel’s national debating champion Noa Ovadia in San Francisco. Experts say that the machine, which drew its knowledge from hundreds of millions of documents and was not connected to the Internet, was a groundbreaking display of artificial intelligence.
The audience who attended the event voted that the machine offered better arguments, despite a few slip-ups. Ms. Ovadia also remarked that it was very optimistic about how humans respond to facts and figures.
Arvind Krishna, IBM’s director of research, said that their experiment seeks to push the boundaries of AI in a way the likes of Google is yet to demonstrate with its game-playing AI.
