At the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce Phils. Inc. held in Malacañang last Tuesday, President Rodrigo Duterte revealed India’s interest in offering the country its own telecommunications player.
Duterte said that he spoke with several businessmen during his official visit to India in last January for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations-India Commemorative Summit and mentioned that a number of Indian businesses have already been established in the country, particularly in the construction sector.
The President had been pushing for a third telco player to break the duopoly held by PLDT Inc. and Globe Telecom and insisted on a March 2018 deadline, declining the 2 month extension sought by the DICT.
