The Iranian government has blocked Telegram and Instagram after a spate of anti-establishment protests in the country.

The government says that the encrypted messaging app and the social media platform had been used to organize the protests and promote dissent in the country. President Hassan Rouhani said that “Iranians have the right to protest, but not cause disorder.”

In a post, Telegram creator Pavel Durov revealed that they had to take down a public channel called @amadnews for encouraging its subscribers to use explosives and firearms against the police. The channel creators however, created a new channel for its subscribers after pledging to stop promoting violence.
