London Mayor Sadiq Khan said this week that tech firm should tackle the issue of hate speech more seriously. However, he also believes that such companies may not be motivated enough to find the solution by themselves.

Khan suggested that stricter regulations, such as large fines, may serve to chivvy and cajole tech giants  to take action. The mayor revealed examples of abusive messages that he had received messages in his keynote speech at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas.

Khan cited Germany as an example of a country where tech companies can face hefty fines for not removing hate speech in a timely manner.
