Mark Zuckerberg’s commitment to the removal of hate speech within a 24-hour period was met with positive feedback from civil society groups in Myanmar who called it a “historic” move.

Facebook, which has become the main social network in Myanmar, had been criticized by human rights advocates of not doing enough to address the problem of hate messages. However, Yangon-based social media analyst Victoire Rio said that while it may still be unclear how the company intends to achieve the target, they laud the Zuckerberg’s promise as they had been clamoring for it for some time.

Facebook had also been a source of anti-Rohingya propaganda according to the UN.
