EU Antitrust Head Reports Progress in Android, AdSense Probe

European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager reported Wednesday that the EU Commission’s investigation into Google’s anti-competition case involving Android and AdSense is advancing. The case had been opened in 2015 after a lobbying group called FairSearch had filed a complaint. A 2016 document revealed a proposal to levy a large fine against the search giant for its revenue-sharing agreements with smartphone makers that pre-install Google Search. Google was also accused of being anti-competitive by requiring Chrome and other Google apps to be installed with Google Play, as well as blocking competitors using AdSense. Lawmaker Ramon Tremosa lamented that “Five years in […]

Latest Chrome Build Now Comes with Ad Blocker

In a blog post this week, Google’s Chris Bentzel revealed that Chrome will now be blocking non-CBA approved ads automatically. A survey composed of 40,000 respondents from US and Europe established that ads which hide a large portion of the page, as well as full page and flashing animated ads were considered to be “disruptive” and are not up to Better Ads Standards. Chrome will then notify the user if such an ad had been blocked. According to Campaign magazine editor Emily Tan, the advertising industry initially thought that Google would be blocking ads across the board, but is now […]

Chrome Adds New Security Features to Fight “Malvertising”

Last Thursday, Google announced plans for three new security features for Chrome that will help stop sneaky redirections by spammy and malicious websites. One of the features to be implemented in Chrome 64 will block iframe redirects that use Javascript codes to redirect users to a malicious page. Gary Warner, Director of Research in Computer Forensics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) called it a “huge help” in the fight against malvertising. Another feature will block “tab-unders”, or web pages that open links in new tabs, which then redirect the original tab to a new URL. This is […]

Chrome May Stop Cryptocurrency Miners Via Special Permission

Chrome May Stop Cryptocurrency Miners Via Special Permission

Chrome engineers are planning to use a special browser permission to stop in-browser cryptocurrency miners. Chrome engineer Ojan Vafai suggested implementing a “battery saver mode” where tasks are aggressively throttled. A tab in battery saver mode which is put in the background will have its tasks stopped completely. It was also revealed that the engineers have shelved the idea of blocking the miner’s Javascript code at browser level by using a blacklist, calling it impractical.   Until Chrome engineers can agree on a final solution to the issue, users are advised to use miner blocking extensions like AntiMiner, minerBlock, or […]

Safari Full of Security Bugs, According to Google Test

Google’s Project Zero team recently used a new security testing toolkit on 5 browsers and found Safari had the most number of flaws. Using Domato, a “fuzzer” that inputs random data into a software application to test for abnormalities, Google engineer Ivan Fratric found that Safari had the worst results out of the 5 browsers that included Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Edge. Safari was found to have a total of 17 security bugs after being subjected to 100 million fuzz tests. The team then contacted each browser vendor and gave them a bug report and a copy of the […]

Chrome Adds Warning Feature for Extensions That Hijack the User’s Internet Connection

Google Chrome Canary builds (v62.x) now have a warning feature that alerts the user about any extensions that takes control of their proxy settings or internet connection. The warning pops up at the upper-right hand corner of the browser where users can immediately click to cancel the action of the malicious extensions that usually redirects a new tab to a custom web page or search engine. The Google Play Store has recently been flooded with hundreds of malicious extensions and Google says this feature is one of the steps in their plan to solve the issue. Source: Bleeping Computer

Google Chrome Extension Hijacked to Deliver Malicious Ads to Users

Thursday reports reveal that attackers seized Chris Pederick’s developer account to serve malicious adware on a Google Chrome extension called the Web Developer. Pedrick, also Bleacher Report’s director of engineering, created the extension with debug apps and popup overlays to help developers build and edit their own web pages. However, he fell victim to a phishing email last August 2, enabling an unauthorized attacker to take over his Google developer account. The attacker embedded malicious code in the extension program to launch the v0.4.9 update to more than one million active users. The suspicious updates were on public for only […]
