Last Monday, security researcher Scott Helme tweeted that a cryptocurrency miner was present on US and Australian government websites. Helme said that around 4000 websites had been affected using the Browsealoud (ba.js) plugin which was embedded with the Coinhive cryptocurrency miner. Hundreds of Websites Now Use Visitor’s PC to Mine Cryptocurrency

A recent report from adblock company AdGuard says that around a hundred websites now use their visitor’s CPU to mine cryptocurrency, similar to what The Pirate Bay did around a month ago. The report estimates that the domains were able to make around $43,000 within 3 weeks using popular scripts like CoinHive or JSECoin. Most of these domains however, are considered to be “shady” websites that host porn or pirated content. Such websites have difficulty earning from advertising, which is why they find mining to be a better option. However, they rarely let their users know that their computer is […]

However, tech observers suspect that it may have been done with the company’s knowledge, since the setThrottle value was set to remain dormant 97% of the time. Pirate Bay Users May Have to Mine Cryptocurrency to Keep Using Site

Reports from a few days ago revealed that popular torrent site Pirate Bay had experimented using a cryptocurrency miner on the site’s users. Some of the visitors reported seeing an uptick on their CPU usage, and it was eventually uncovered that the site was using a cryptocurrency miner from Coinhive to mine Monero, a cryptocurrency. The miner has since been taken down, and the operators of the site confirmed that they did it to see if it was a viable source of funds instead of ads. Observers have commented that while the concept of websites using visitor’s space PC power […]
