New US Government Report Seeks International Cooperation Against Cybersecurity Threats

The US Department of Commerce and Homeland Security called for increased cooperation with global partners against cyber threats in a joint report recently submitted to the White House. Responding to the May 2017 Executive Order, Strengthening the Cybersecurity of Federal Networks and Critical Infrastructure, the report said that while effective tools against botnets exist, they are not widely used. Homeland Says US Will Take Tougher Stance Against Cyber Criminals

At the recently held RSA conference last Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen issued some words of warning to cyber criminals, saying that the US will not tolerate cyber meddling aimed at the heart of the country’s democracy. Nielsen said that “complacency is being replaced by consequences” and threatened attackers that the US will not be passive while its networks are being compromised. Earlier this week, a number of state secretaries were said to have been left frustrated by the inadequate cyber intelligence being sent to them by the Department of Homeland Security. Kaspersky Products Officially Banned from US Gov Systems

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published in a Binding Operational Directive that products from antivirus software company Kaspersky will no longer be used on United States government computers. The verdict was released after accusations from the Senate Intelligence Committee that the security software vendor had hidden ties with the Russian government. The decision was made based on the risks in information security on federal information systems as the software had access to files and may compromise national security.
