Addressing the Joint Standing Committee on Trade and Investment Growth last Friday, Huawei’s VP of Global Government Affairs Simon Lacey said that national security concerns should not be used as a “blank cheque” to justify protectionism. With remarks pointed at the national security exception invoked by US President Donald Trump’s Muslim-majority country travel ban, Lacey further argued that such exceptions should not be regulated under free trade agreements, but rather through the World Trade Organization (WTO).
