Facebook Removes Posts by Russian “Troll Factory”

Facebook said last Tuesday that it had deleted hundreds of accounts and pages linked to a Russian “troll factory” which, according to the US government, is responsible for fake post intended to sway public opinion during the 2016 US election. Tumblr announced earlier this week that it had removed 84 accounts used by Russia’s Internet Research Agency for spreading misinformation in 2016. Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman recently revealed that it had removed “a few hundred accounts” suspected of being of Russian origin after media website the Daily Beast said that it had received information on the activities of the Internet Research Agency on the site. A news site called The Daily Beast claims that it had obtained leaked documents which revealed the activity of a Russian troll farm on Reddit. Reddit is known to be a hub that leans towards activism and extreme views. Facebook Reveals to Users if They Have “Liked” a Russian Propaganda Account

Last Wednesday, Facebook announced plans to let users see if they have followed any accounts or pages linked to Russia’s propaganda efforts within January 2015 to August 2017. Users will be able to see these Facebook and Instagram accounts in a Help Center page that may be launched by the end of the year. The move was done to fulfill a request from the US Congress. Google Confirms Russian Ad Buys Influenced 2016 Elections

Google recently confirmed in its report that Kremlin-linked groups have indeed bought ads and used YouTube for its disinformation campaign in the US 2016 elections. Google revealed that there were two accounts associated with the Internet Research Agency which spent $4,700 on Google ads in last year’s election. However, the ads did not target specific states, nor users of a specific political leaning. Facebook to Show Russian Election Disruption Ads to Congress

Information on around 3000 Russian-bought ads will be turned over by Facebook to congressional investigators for review this week. It was revealed that the ads, amounting to around $100,000, were bought by a group called “Internet Research Agency” for the purpose of interfering with the 2016 US elections. A spokesperson from Facebook said that the company believes the investigators are in a good position to evaluate and make a determination from the ads, given their access to classified information.
