Parents Complain to ASA After Kids See Horror Ad on YouTube

Three parents filed complaints against YouTube after their children had inadvertently watched an ad for a horror movie called Insidious: The Last Key, which is rated 15 in the UK. It is said that the ad was shown before videos of songs from Frozen, a Lego fire station instructional, and a clip from PJ Masks. The parents said that the kids witnessed scenes where a young woman was seen “lying on a floor immobile, bloodied and distressed while a humanoid creature crept towards her and then probed at her with claw-like fingers and pierced her skin”. YouTube clarified that the […]

“Disturbing” Videos Still on YouTube Kids

Earlier this week, a number of viewers reported that there were still some inappropriate videos being circulated on YouTube Kids, even after the company had vowed to do more to tackle the problem. The Google-owned company said that it would be deploying more human curators to review videos and not just rely on its algorithm. However, BBC’s Newsround said that it still found some videos depicting disturbing visuals such as Mickey Mouse characters with guns, bloodied clowns, and Paw Patrol characters on a burning plane. Google’s Katie O’Donovan admitted to Newsround that the company was having a difficult time because […]

YouTube Obscenity Filter Suffers Glitch

Volunteer moderators from YouTube’s Trusted Flagger program recently revealed that YouTube’s reporting system for preventing sexualized comments on children’s videos has not been working properly for more than a year already. While YouTube says that it is able to process a “vast majority” of reports within 24 hours, the volunteers say that there’s still around 100,000 predatory accounts still leaving indecent comments. Even though users can report illegal content and predatory accounts, volunteer moderators say that they have no way of seeing the flagged offensive comment since the associated links are often missing from the report. YouTube Cracks Down on Questionable Kids Content

YouTube is seen to be tightening rules on questionable kid-focused content that is able to get around the filtering mechanism on its platform. The move seeks to prevent content from creators who attempt to attempt to slip in themes unsuitable for younger kids into children’s shows to get more views. One such example features a well-known children’s show character called Peppa Pig who was made to visit a gory slaughterhouse.   Google will now be employing a number of new measures including stricter content control, demonitization of unsuitable content targeted at kids, aggressive comment patrolling, and better understanding of context. […]

New YouTube Policy Will Allow Users to Flag Inappropriate Content Targeting Kids

YouTube recently announced that it will be implementing a new policy in its main app to age-restrict bizarre and disturbing videos that target kids. One such content shows a popular cartoon character named Peppa Pig drinking bleach and getting her teeth violently yanked out by a dentist. The new policy will also allow users to flag the inappropriate content as well. YouTube said that this should add an extra layer of protection and help weed out offensive content from the main app before they populate the Kids app. Source: TechCrunch
