The police chief of Valdez, Alaska recently confirmed that their city government had paid off a ransom amounting to $26,623.97 after hackers had crippled their IT system using a ransomware last July.
Officer Bart Hinkle said they engaged a Virginia digital forensics firm who anonymously contacted the attackers on the City’s behalf to investigate and possibly negotiate ransom terms.
Valdez city manager and the incident commander for the incident Elke Doom said that they ended up paying the ransom after consulting with the City’s legal team and has since been bringing the city’s IT systems back online slowly, one after the other.
