The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said this week that a total of AU$ 4.4 million had already been stolen in around 8000 remote access scam incidents reported by Australians this year.
Most victims say that they had been tricked by a phone scammer pretending to be from Telstra, the National Broadband Network (NBN) company, Microsoft, and even the police, to hand over control of their computer via screen-sharing software such as TeamViewer
ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard revealed that scammers in the past told their victims to provide permission for remote access so they can fix the virus on their computer, but nowadays they are telling people that they need the public’s help to catch hackers.
