Barcelona Uses High Tech Approach to Address Noise Pollution

Barcelona is reportedly taking a high-tech approach to address the noise pollution problem in one of its popular destinations Plaza del Sol using low-cost, easy-to-use sensors produced with funding from the EU.

The sensors, which were fabricated in Barcelona’s fabrication laboratory, are also able to detect levels of air pollution, humidity, and temperature. Using the sensors, the residents were able to show that the night-time noise levels exceeded World Health Organization recommendations and were able to press the city council to take action.

Lab head Tomas Diez says that he and a number of other technologists, designers and architects, are backing a project called Fab City which is a collective of 18 cities from Europe, India, China and America that seeks to create more sustainable and productive cities around the world in the next 30 years.
