Brazil Still Poring Over Internet Impact 11 Days Before Elections
Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court is reportedly still deep in discussions on the role of social media in spreading misinformation, despite the final round of the country’s presidential elections now only 2 weeks away.
It is said that a TSE council focusing on the impact of the internet on the elections realized only now that the dissemination of fake news was much more prolific than anticipated, and that WhatsApp has become the most popular way to spread such content.
It was revealed that the council is still debating whether WhatsApp should be subjected to rules on the restriction of information flows ahead of presidential elections. TSE officials also sought the help of WhatsApp representatives this week to discuss what could be done at this stage.
