Facebook Stresses Effectivity of AI Tools on New Community Standards Report

Facebook recently released a new report on how the company combats spam and fake accounts on its platform. It is said that the report is an attempt to show the effectiveness of Facebook’s artificial intelligence (AI) in flagging content before it impacts users and enforcing the service’s Community Standards. Google Assistant Now Capable of Making “Human” Phone Calls

Last Tuesday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai demonstrated at the company’s I/O event the AI capabilities of Google Assistant. Using Google Duplex AI, the Assistant was able to call and use a convincingly human voice to book an appointment at a hair salon. Pichai said that they found that scheduling via phone adds up to a lot of time which is something the technology will be able to address.   He also revealed that while there was still a lot of work to be done, public testing will be ready as soon as this summer.       Source: CNBC

The White House is set to meet with major US tech companies such as Facebook and Google, along with senior government officials to discuss the future of artificial intelligence in the country. Companies from various industries including Intel, Ford, Boeing, Mastercard, Microsoft, Accenture, IBM, and General Electric are expected to participate in the day-long event. A White House spokesperson said that AI is quickly transforming every segment of industry in the US. Facebook revealed at its recently held F8 conference that it has created a special ethics team tasked to ensure that the company’s artificial intelligence systems will be able to make decisions with as little bias as possible. Researchers Boycott Top South Korean University Over AI Weapons

Last Wednesday, around 50 top artificial intelligence researchers in South Korea announced a boycott of KAIST after the university had opened an AI weapons lab with Hanwha systems, one of the country’s largest manufacturer of cluster munitions last February. The researchers said that they would no longer work with the university unless it pledged to refrain from developing AI weapons without “meaningful human control”. University President Sung-Chul Shin immediately responded, reaffirming that KAIST will not be conducting any research activities counter to human dignity, including autonomous weapons that do not have meaningful human control.
