One of the questions presented a situation in which an “adult man” asks a 14-year-old girl for “sexual images” to which Facebook provided one option which says “This content should be allowed on Facebook, and I would not mind seeing it.” Facebook had already concluded the survey and Rosen reiterated that such activity is and will always be completely unacceptable on […]

Reddit Admits Site May Have Been Used for Russian Propaganda

Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman recently revealed that it had removed “a few hundred accounts” suspected of being of Russian origin after media website the Daily Beast said that it had received information on the activities of the Internet Research Agency on the site. The IRA, a known Russian “troll farm”, had apparently gamed Reddit to amplify its propaganda posts. However, Huffman added that the biggest problem is that it is fairly more complex to spot and stop indirect propaganda. The Daily Beast said that Russia probably sought to provoke and divide US citizens on issues, rather than to support any […]

Lawmakers Point to Russia for US Energy Policy Interference via Social Media

Last Thursday, Republican lawmakers said that Russian operatives used social media to spread pro-environmental activist messages to stir division in US oil and gas policy. It was said that Russians had created ads on Facebook and Instagram countering Energy Transfer Partners’ Dakota Access Pipeline which say “Americans have been stealing from Native Americans for more than 500 years.” A known denier of climate science, House of Representatives Science Committee head Lamar Smith said that as a major energy supplier in Europe, it is in Russia’s interest to counter plans of the Trump administration to expand natural gas and oil exports […]
