Two New Lawsuits Filed Against Uber for 2016 Breach

Within only 48 hours of Uber’s breach disclosure, two separate class-action lawsuits had already been filed against the company in the state of California. One of the cases which was filed in Los Angeles, Alejanro Flores v. Raiser, alleged that Raiser, Uber’s subsidiary, had been “grossly negligent” and “departed from all reasonable standards of care” Another lawsuit filed in San Francisco, Danyelle Townsend and Ken Tew v. Uber, stated that Uber should have had the necessary safeguards in place to protect the plaintiff’s personally identifiable information. Source: ARSTechnica

Last Tuesday, U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chief Ajit Pai said that he is planning to repeal “net neutrality” rules which were advocated by former President Barack Obama. The rules, which inhibit internet providers from blocking or limiting content, or charging more for certain kinds of content, are said to promote a free and open internet where all users can have equal access to content. Philippine Telegraph & Telephone Corp (PT&T) chairman Salvador Zamora announced last Tuesday that the company is in talks with eight other Chinese companies in hopes of landing a strategic partner before the end of the year. The Bases Conversion and Development and Development Authority (BCDA) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) recently entered into a landing party agreement with Facebook to establish a high speed internet infrastructure in the country. The project, called Luzon Bypass Infrastructure, should deliver a faster, more affordable, and more accessible internet across the Philippines, according to the BCDA and DICT. Australian IoT Alliance to Introduce Certification Tick

The Internet of Things Alliance Australia (IoTAA) recently announced that it is currently working on a security framework for the country’s IoT ecosystem. Last Wednesday, IoTAA principal consultant Geof Heydon revealed that they have gotten the support of the Prime Minister’s Industry 4.0 Taskforce for a process that certifies IoT devices, networks, and suppliers. Heydon adds that a certification “tick” would help tell consumers that a particular device can be secure if operated as recommended. NATO to Create Cyber Operations Center, Adds “Cyber-weapons” to Armory

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg recently announced that the alliance will be adding its member states’ cyberwarfare capabilities as a military option. Stoltenberg also revealed plans for the creation of NATO’s Cyber Operations Center, which had been prompted in part by the recent “assertiveness” of Russia. He added that the use of “cyber weapons” may be more appropriate than the standard military response in certain scenarios, and that it will be an integrated part in any military conflict.
