China Enforces New E-Commerce Law

The Chinese government recently enforced a new e-commerce law which it says should address the deluge of counterfeit products in the country’s online shopping market.

The law, which came into effect last January 1, will also compel e-commerce platform operators to protect the rights, interests, and personal information of consumers.

The new rules will also cover platforms operating outside of China, but are profiting off Chinese customers. Such companies will have to register as an e-commerce business and pay tax in the country.
