China Tells Canada to Free Huawei Exec

Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng this week lodged a protest with US and Canadian ambassadors ordering the release of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou who was arrested in Canada last Saturday.

China insists that Meng, who is being held in Vancouver since last Saturday and faces extradition to the US, has not violated any laws. The Huawei CFO is being accused of conspiracy to defraud multiple financial institutions and may spend up to 30 years in jail if found guilty.

The minister issued strongly-worded statements to both US and Canada, threatening “serious consequences” and a response depending on US actions.
