Chinese Media Pressures Canada to Free Huawei Exec, Defy US

The Global Times published this week several headlines that may add pressure to Canada to grant unconditional freedom to Meng Wanzhou, one of Huawei’s top executives.

The state-run paper urged Canada to distance itself from the US’s “hegemonism” and just fulfill its obligations to protect human rights and help maintain international order.

Additionally, the Global Times said that the arrest of the Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig was in no way connected to the case, but added that “the assumption is because Canada has gone too far and people naturally believe China will retaliate”.
