Last Monday, security researcher Scott Helme tweeted that a cryptocurrency miner was present on US and Australian government websites.

Helme said that he confirmed the initial findings of another security expert, Ian Thornton-Trump, who previously said that the website of the UK Information Commissioner’s Office had been compromised by a cryptojacking malware.

Helme said that around 4000 websites had been affected using the Browsealoud (ba.js) plugin which was embedded with the Coinhive cryptocurrency miner. He additionally said that the hackers were able to compromise a large number of websites just by tampering with a single website that all others load content from.
