DICT Expresses Support for Bifrost Cable System Project
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) supports the Bifrost Cable System Project, the subsea cable system project by Converge ICT Solutions Inc. and Keppel Telecommunications and Transport (T&T) Ltd.
Set to be completed in 2024, the Bifrost Cable System Project is the first of its kind. A 15,000-kilometer subsea cable system will directly connect the west coast of North America to Singapore, passing through Indonesia, the Philippines, and Guam. The agreement between Converge and Keppel T&T is said to grant Converge an Indefeasible Right of Use (IRU) for one fiber pair on the main trunk of the Bifrost Cable System.
According to DICT Secretary Ivan Uy, the project “will open another data superhighway in the country that will enable the Philippines to get bigger bandwidth and faster internet connection.” It is in line with the DICT’s Broadband ng Masa program that aims to provide connectivity across the country, especially in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs).
