EU Increases Pressure on Social Media Giants
The European Union is expected to turn up the pressure on social media companies such as Google and Facebook as it plans to create a Code of Practice on Disinformation for all 28 member states to prevent the spread of fake news.
According to the Commission, online platforms have fallen short of the challenge posed by disinformation and the manipulative use of platforms’ infrastructure. Such platforms have been ordered to produce “measurable effects” on the code of practice by October, or face further actions such as regulation.
However, tech industry association CCIA said that the deadline seem rushed, and while the industry takes disinformation seriously, it is important to recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the issue.
