Facebook Bans Accounts of Myanmar Military Officials

Facebook announced earlier this week that it has banned several members of Myanmar’s military from the platform, and it has removed one of their linked Instagram accounts for attempting to spread hate and fake news.   

Facebook spokeswoman Ruchika Budhraja says this is the first ever instance that the company has banned military or political leaders.

Budhraja added that Facebook’s decision was based on findings by the United Nations, as well as media reports and advocacy groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch which revealed that the army had carried out mass killings and gang rapes of Muslim Rohingya with “genocidal intent.
