Facebook Demotes Stories with False, Misleading Headlines

It was reported this week that Facebook fact-checkers can now slow the spread of fake news by downranking stories with false or misleading headlines.

Facebook said that its fact-checkers can now rate a story just by its headline. However, these will be demoted less in the News Feed compared to stories that have been fact-checked in its entirety.

Facebook spokesperson Lauren Svensson said that the company is always soliciting feedback from its fact-checking partners, and update its guidance and processes based on new gray areas that warrant clarification of its program. Svensson adds that the new rating option should give more clarity to fact-checkers and publishers alike.
