French Regulator Team to Check Facebook’s Hate Speech Removal System
0 comments
French president Emmanuel Macron said this week that his government will be sending Facebook a team of regulators which will be checking how the company combats hate speech online.
A small team of senior civil servants will be embedded in Facebook for six months starting January to verify the firm’s goodwill and see if its process in removing offensive speech can be improved. The experimental approach is considered to the first in what Macron calls “smart regulation”.
A government source also said that the team may be seconded from the telecoms regulator and the interior and justice ministries. Facebook meanwhile responded that the selection was up to the French presidency.
