Google Makes Push to Monetize Product Searches
Google has reportedly initiated a program with a number of big retailers where it will further be capitalizing on searches where consumers ask Google where to buy a particular product or how to carry out a transaction.
Daniel Alegre, Google’s president for retail and shopping said that they have teamed up with companies such as Target Corp, Walmart Inc, Home Depot Inc, Costco Wholesale Corp and Ulta Beauty Inc. to better capture more purchases on desktops, mobile and smart devices. The search giant will be listing products and linking to these retailers’ loyalty programs in exchange for a cut from the sale of each product.
It was noted that the Shopping Actions program may put Google in a better position to compete with Amazon. As of now, most product searches often end up displaying a link to Amazon, and Alegre says that the new program may help retailers of all sizes keep their customers.
