Google Removes Gender-Based Pronouns from AI Tool

Google had reportedly blocked gender-based pronouns from Gmail’s autocomplete feature, fearing that it may misidentify and offend users.

Gmail product manager Paul Lambert said they discovered the problem when he typed “I am meeting an investor next week,” and Smart Compose suggested a possible follow-up question: “Do you want to meet him?” instead of “her.”

Lambert said that the company is not taking a risk with gender bias. He added that not all ‘screw ups’ are equal and gender is a big thing to get wrong.
