Government Websites Down After Expiration of TLS Certificates

Internet services company Netcraft reported this week that a number of US government websites, including NASA, the US Department of Justice, and the Court of Appeals, have been rendered inaccessible due to their expired TLS certificates.

It is said that the US federal government shutdown caused by US President Donald Trump’s refusal to sign any 2019 government budget bill had left government agencies, including staff handling IT support and cybersecurity grossly understaffed.

US government websites are now shutting down one after the other without admins to follow proper procedures and implement correctly-functioning HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) policies, leaving them totally inaccessible, not even for browsing basic information.
