On August 12, UN Human Rights experts called for a worldwide moratorium on all sales and transfers of “highly dangerous” surveillance technology until robust regulations that ensure compliance with international human rights standards are set up in the “human rights-free” surveillance tech and trade sector. They also urged surveillance company NSO Group, which has been accused of committing unlawful surveillance practices, to disclose if it has done any human rights due diligence in order to support the Group’s rejection of the allegations against it. Israel, the NSO Group’s home state, has also been asked to disclose what measures it took to review the alleged unlawful practices by the NSO Group.
