Japan Looks to Ban Huawei, ZTE from Deals

Japan may likely ban China’s Huawei and ZTE from government purchases of telecommunications products over fears of intelligence leaks and cyber attacks, a government source said.

The Yomiuri newspaper said that the government will be revising its internal rules on procurement as early as Monday, however, Japan is likely not to name the two companies.

The decision follows the banning of Huawei in other Western countries such as US and Australia over national security concerns. US intelligence says that Huawei is linked to China’s government and that its equipment could contain “backdoors” for use by spies. However, no evidence has been publicly revealed and the firm has denied such claims.
