Journalist Warns Against Facebook Pages Spreading Unverified News

At a recent panel discussion at #MoveCebu: Social good in the digital age, SunStar Cebu editor Sol Amante warned against anonymous Facebook pages that spread unverified news.

Amante recounted a case involving a popular Facebook page named Cebu Flash Report that spread the news of an alleged bomb threat in July 2017. Although unverified, the post reportedly prompted a number of schools to suspend classes.

Amante said that while not all of CFR’s post were false, users had to be cautious of such pages as they cannot be held accountable to the public due to their anonymity.
