LA Times Owner: Social Media is the “Cancer of Our Time”
In an interview last Wednesday, Los Angeles Times owner and billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong called social media platforms “the cancer of our time” which are responsible for short attention spans in this millenium.
The CEO of biotech firm NantKwest also said that social media is a metastasis of news which needs to be changed. He described Facebook as an “advertising facing” organization where users on its platform are unable to distinguish real from fake news and opinions.
The South African-born entrepreneur is just one of the billionaires who recently issued scathing criticisms against social media. Last year, ex-Facebook executive Chamath Palihapitiya said that social media is creating a society that confuses “popularity” with “truth.”
