DoJ Charges Trader of Hacking, Placing Illegal Trades

The US Department of Justice recently charged a trader for hacking into various financial companies and making unauthorized trades. Pennsylvanian Joseph Willner was reported to have ran a scheme with a partner where he put up “short-sale” offers at inflated prices. Willner and his partner then used the hacked trading accounts of several brokerage firms to buy the offers, which he then bought back at a much lower price. Last Thursday, Google announced plans for three new security features for Chrome that will help stop sneaky redirections by spammy and malicious websites. One of the features to be implemented in Chrome 64 will block iframe redirects that use Javascript codes to redirect users to a malicious page. NATO to Create Cyber Operations Center, Adds “Cyber-weapons” to Armory

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg recently announced that the alliance will be adding its member states’ cyberwarfare capabilities as a military option. Stoltenberg also revealed plans for the creation of NATO’s Cyber Operations Center, which had been prompted in part by the recent “assertiveness” of Russia. He added that the use of “cyber weapons” may be more appropriate than the standard military response in certain scenarios, and that it will be an integrated part in any military conflict. Last Wednesday, Russia’s communications regulator Roskomnadzor said that it will be checking if Facebook had been complying with Russian law. The watchdog had already threatened Facebook with a ban last September, telling it that it had to store the data of Russian citizens in servers within the country. The FBI revealed last Tuesday that it was unable to access the contents of the Texas church shooter’s mobile phone due to encryption. According to FBI special agent Christopher Combs, the phone has already been sent to Quantico for further analysis.
