Singapore Plans Against Fake News Raises Concerns from Tech Giants

Last Tuesday, US tech giants have expressed their worries on Singapore’s plans for new legislation aimed at tackling the problem of fake news.

Alvin Tan, Facebook’s head of public policy for Southeast Asia said that the city-state already had a variety of laws and regulations which address hate speech, defamation and the spreading of false news, and a new one will not be the best way to address the issue of misinformation.

In a parliamentary hearing attended by executives from Facebook, Twitter and Google, Singapore pointed out that it was particularly vulnerable to the effects of fake news due to its size, its role as a global financial hub, and its ethnic and religious mix.
