Microsoft Stops Russian Hacking Attempts on Conservative Sites

Microsoft revealed last Monday that its Digital Crimes Unit was able to stop Russian hackers from stealing user data from the websites of several conservative groups. The DCU was able to stop a hacking group called Fancy Bear or APT28 from taking control of six domains that promote democracy and advocate for cybersecurity. Five military wives earlier this week reported receiving death threats and troubling messages via Facebook from culprits claiming to be affiliated with Islamic State militants. According to one of the wives, the hacker threatened to “slaughter” her family and said that they were “much closer than you think”. German Government Used Hackers to Track Culprits, Says Top Ministry Official

Deputy Interior Minister Ole Schroeder revealed last Thursday that German security officials had been using hackers to find the culprits who had launched an attack on the government’s networks. Schroeder said that the security officials were able to contain the cyber attack while tracking the malicious actors suspected to be the Russian hacking group APT28 by the media.
