Facebook has reportedly rolled out a Reddit-style downvote button to a larger number of users in order to improve the quality of comments on its platform.   A Facebook spokesperson further clarified that the move had been prompted by users requesting for better public discussions and spaces where differing opinions can contribute to a more constructive dialogue. Popular social news aggregator Reddit announced this week that it has banned around 1000 accounts linked to Russia’s Internet Research Agency (IRA) which is considered to be a “troll factory” dedicated to spreading propaganda and misinformation. Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman recently revealed that it had removed “a few hundred accounts” suspected of being of Russian origin after media website the Daily Beast said that it had received information on the activities of the Internet Research Agency on the site. Germany has begun enforcing the The Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz (NetzDG) law which is set to penalize social media sites for failure to quickly to remove hate speech, fake news and other illegal material. The law was passed in June 2017 and came into force this October. Websites and online services that fail to remove said material within 24 hours may face fines of up to 50m euro (£44.3m).
