The Russian government is reportedly trying out a more precise technology that can block individual services to prevent the use of Telegram in the country. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov wrote this week that Apple had been preventing Telegram from updating on iOS, possibly to appease the Russian government after it had blocked the encrypted messaging app in the country. Russia Blocks VPNs and Proxy Services Used for Telegram

Russian telecoms watchdog Roskomnadzor moved to block around 50 VPN and proxy services for providing access to Telegram which had also been blocked around last month. The list of banned services had not been officially revealed as the ban on Telegram itself is said to not be going according to plan. Iran Blocks Telegram, Promotes Own Messaging App

Iran’s state media reported this week that the country’s judiciary court has decided to block popular encrypted messaging app Telegram, effective last Monday. The Iranian government says that Telegram had been used to coordinate illicit activities, as well as anti-government protests during the period of unrest earlier this year. The government is instead endorsing a homegrown messaging service called Soroush which reportedly features emojis depicting veiled women calling for “death to America”. Russian Telecoms Watchdog Asks Google, Apple to Remove Telegram from Stores

Russia’s state telecommunications regulator, Roskomnadzor, had reportedly requested US tech giants Google and Apple to remove the messaging app Telegram from their download stores. Russia had officially banned the encrypted messaging service in the country after CEO Pavel Durov had refused to surrender private user data to the FSB. Last Friday, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov revealed that their application will be using its built-in systems to bypass the ban Russia had brought down last Friday. Durov said on his VK page that users will not have to do anything. However, he cannot guarantee that the messaging app will work 100% without using VPNs. Cybersecurity company Kaspersky Labs recently found that hackers had been exploiting a flaw in messaging app Telegram to infect user’s devices with a cryptocurrency mining malware. It was said that the attackers used a Telegram feature that reverses the order of characters to rename files. Apple recently revealed that it had previously banned messaging app Telegram from its Apps Stode because some users were apparently using it to share child abuse pictures. Apple Restores Telegram in App Store

Apple announced that it has restored popular secure messaging app Telegram in its App Store. Telegram and Telegram X had been removed yesterday when Apple found that inappropriate content was being spread on the messaging platform. Both apps however, were not removed from Play Store. CEO Pavel Durov revealed that around 500,000 users download Telegram everyday on Play Store, and 100,000 for iOS. Telegram, which is touted as a more secure than apps such as WhatsApp, use end-to-end encryption, supports self-destructing messages, and leaves no data on company servers.  Source: ZDNet
