Last Sunday, a senior official of the Trump administration said that the government is currently looking at several options to counter China’s snooping on US phone calls, including one which involves the construction of a high speed 5G wireless network.

The official told Reuters that the US wants to build a network which will prevent bad actors from getting in, and to ensure that the Chinese don’t put every non-5G network out of business.

However, it still isn’t clear whether the US government would have enough spectrum to put up its own 5G network. AT&T meanwhile announced that it will be launching its own 5G mobile service in 12 US locations this year.
