Ukrainian Hacker, Traders Charged for Stealing SEC Filings

The US charged this week 10 individuals for illegally accessing Edgar, the SEC’s corporate filing system used by public companies and money managers.

The authorities revealed that a Ukrainian hacker and several traders were able to steal market-moving corporate earnings news stolen from a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission database and using it in a scheme where they earned $4.14 million off illegal trades.

The Department of Justice said the suspects sent phishing emails to SEC employees that appeared to be from other employees, allowing them to install malware on SEC computers.
