US Judge Rules Uber Drivers are Not Employees

Last Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Michael Baylson ruled that Uber’s limousine drivers are not employees, but independent contractors according to federal law.

It is said to be the first ruling of its kind on a contentious issue for the ride-hailing firm who has been hit with numerous lawsuits which argue that its drivers should be entitled to employee benefits. However, the Philadelphia judge said that the company does not hold enough control over UberBLACK drivers for them to be considered as employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act since they are able to work whenever they want, are allowed activities such as napping, personal errands, or smoke in between rides.
