US Lawmakers Express Worries Over Chinese-Made Subway Cars

US senator including Sen. Mark R. Warner, Sen. Tim Kaine, Sen. Ben Cardin, and Sen. Chris Van Hollen have expressed their concerns this week over the involvement of a Chinese company in a bidding contract on rail cars for the new metro rail line in Washington.

The lawmakers sent a letter to Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority WMATA CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld saying that state-owned China Railway Rolling Stock Corp. (CRRC) may be using bargain prices to provide the rail cars to undermine the country’s economic competitiveness and national security.

The senators also raised cybersecurity concerns over the cars since they will have systems such as automatic train control, network and trainline control, video surveillance, monitoring and diagnostics, and a data interface with WMATA which can be abused by a threat actor.
